Implementing myBMP: Trini Coupland

Completing the myBMP (Best Management Practices) certification has delivered a range benefits to Trini Coupland’s Condobolin farm. Her experience demonstrates how the program can enhance safety, streamline operations, and improve communication within a farming family.

Trini’s farm had been working towards myBMP for some time, but it was the involvement of her daughter that helped push the process to completion. “We’ve been working towards it for a long time, and then our daughter came home for six months and finished it off, doing all the paperwork,” Trini explained. This final push allowed them to complete essential upgrades, such as fitting the chemical shed with a roller door, safety shower, first aid kits, and spill kits, which had previously been missing.

Improving safety and communication

The myBMP program also helped Trini and her team fine-tune workplace health and safety procedures. They established a WhatsApp group to improve communication among staff and family members, leading to better coordination and safety practices. “Having a WhatsApp group with all the staff and family has been great because we can communicate easily and the boys are getting better at telling us where they are and what they’re doing,” she noted.

For the future

Trini believes that the farming industry is moving towards more rigorous standards and that early adoption of myBMP is a strategic advantage. “I think everyone should probably do it. Farming is going that way anyway, and to jump in and get it done early is a good thing,” she said. The certification not only ensures compliance but also fosters better conversations around sustainability and demonstrates that farmers care deeply about their production practices.
