FarmSafe Week: Kurt Von Pein on how myBMP Program can enhance farm safety

Darling Downs cotton grower Kurt Von Pein highlights the importance of ensuring that everyone working on a farm goes home safe and sound. Kurt shares his commitment to safety: "We want everyone working with us—my father, brother, and myself—to come to work every day safe and go home the same way at the end of the day."

Over the past few years, Kurt has implemented various safety measures on his farm, working closely with Cotton Australia and the myBMP (Best Management Practices) program. He has set up facilities like face wash stations and showers for chemical spills, constructed a dedicated chemical storage shed, and bunded fuel tanks to prevent leaks. Additionally, fostering a culture of safety among all workers has been a priority.

With FarmSafe Week underway, the focus is firmly on farm worker safety with the theme "In Safe Hands." This theme underscores the importance of ensuring that every worker on a farm is protected and can perform their duties safely.

Kurt emphasises the value of the myBMP program, which provides a comprehensive checklist and resources for improving farm safety. "By going through the BMP checklist, you'll find you're already doing quite a lot. It gives you confidence, and if you need help, there are plenty of resources and examples from other farms to guide you."

During FarmSafe Week, it is essential to reaffirm the commitment to farm safety. By embracing programs like myBMP and fostering a safety-first culture, every cotton grower and worker can be truly "In Safe Hands."
