Students Inspired by Sustainable Practices and Tech Advances in Cotton at Moo Baa Munch

Students have shown keen interest in technology advances in the cotton industry after hearing from Cotton Australia at Moo Baa Munch.

The program, run by AgForce’s School to Industry Partnership Program, held at Downlands College in Toowoomba, highlights all aspects of the agricultural industry in a two-day event.

This year featured the biggest attendance on record, with more than 1150 students hearing from industry about agriculture, including cotton.

Cotton Australia’s Howard Coggan and Nicole Scott facilitated the workshops across two days, with focus points on IPM and general cotton knowledge.

“The senior students seemed most interested in technology advances, camera spraying, IPM and the likes of crop capsules,” Nicole said.

“We asked a group of prep students how to kill a pest bug, and they came up with very sustainable solutions, except using insecticide.”

Howard said sustainability was incorporated into almost every conversation, and basic facts about cotton including it being a no-waste crop.

“It was a great opportunity to get in front of ag students from the local area who genuinely wanted to learn and know about the cotton industry,” Howard said.

“It’s a good feeling that you’ve contributed to getting even just one student interested in agriculture, and cotton.”
