Teachers Get a Hands-On Look at the Cotton Industry in Moura
Around 40 teachers from seven schools in the Dawson and Callide Valleys recently took part in a Teach the Teacher event in Moura, organised by Cotton Australia's Renee Surawski. The day was all about giving teachers a firsthand look at the cotton industry, from planting to processing.
The group started at Hutchinson Ag’s Macander farm, where they got a close-up look at agronomy practices, including water efficiency, pest management, and farming techniques. For many, it was their first time on a cotton farm, making the experience even more memorable. The cotton picker rides were a big hit, with one teacher amazed at the value of the machinery.
Next stop was the Moura Gin, where teachers saw the ginning process in action and learned how cotton is prepared for market.
To wrap up the day, the group took part in a trivia quiz, testing what they had learned. Prizes were donated by Cotton Seed Distributors, RDO Equipment Australia, the Dawson Catchment Coordinating Association, and QLD Cotton.
The event finished with a BBQ dinner put on by QLD Cotton and the Dawson Valley Cotton Growers Association.
Renee Surawski said, "The teachers were so engaged, excited, and interested. They were fun and really got involved!"
The event came together with support from Hutchinson Ag, Queensland Cotton, and DVCGA.
