Implementing myBMP: Liz Stott, Leeton
Liz Stott, a Leeton cotton grower and Deputy Chair of Cotton Australia, is only weeks away from completing the myBMP (Best Management Practices) certification process on her farm. After initially finding the myBMP program overwhelming, she soon realised her farm already met many of the required standards. "Until you sit down and commit to going through it, you don't actually realise how much you're already doing and it's not as overwhelming as it initially seems," Liz explained.
Streamlining Operations
Before beginning the myBMP process Liz’s farm had basic paperwork and formal systems. The program provided essential templates, such as employment contracts, and improved the management of HR and WHS requirements. It also introduced new technology and cloud-based systems, streamlining various operations on her farm.
Commitment to Best Practices
Liz emphasises that myBMP certification is about more than just compliance. "It's definitely about going beyond compliance and actually demonstrating that we as Australian cotton growers are really committed to best practice," she said. The myBMP certification process demands a dedication to sustainable and responsible farming by documenting these practices and sharing the data with the broader market.
Understanding Global Market Trends
Liz understands the importance of being aware of and adapting to global market trends, highlighting the strong connections to myBMP outcomes. Liz’s advice to other cotton growers is clear. “We need to look to the future and stay informed about industry changes, because ignoring those trends is not an option.”
Looking Ahead
Liz is proud of the progress her farm made through the myBMP program and looks forward to finalising full certification this year. The journey has already helped her farm adopt better systems and prepare for future challenges, a testament to the myBMP program's benefits.
