Changes to Pastoral and Horticulture Awards

From 1 April, the Fair Work Commission has updated how employees under the Pastoral and Horticulture Awards are classified. While most Awards changed in late 2024, these specific changes were delayed until now.

The key updates affect how farm hands are classified based on their experience in the industry:

  • Farm Hand Level 1 (FHL1): This classification can now only be used for an employee’s first six months in the industry.
  • Farm Hand Level 2 (FHL2): Applies from seven to 12 months of experience in the industry.
  • Farm Hand Level 3 (FHL3): For employees with at least 12 months of industry experience who still require supervision but do not meet the criteria for Farm Hand Level 5 (FHL5).

Employers must review their employees' classifications to ensure compliance with the updated structure. Any necessary adjustments should be made in the next full pay period.
