Implementing myBMP: Peter Lennox, Gunnedah

Navigating the myBMP (Best Management Practices) certification process proved to be a surprisingly straightforward task for Gunnedah Farm Manager Peter Lennox. His experience reveals how the program simplifies compliance and bolsters safety measures on the farm.

Peter began his myBMP journey with support from his local Cotton Australia representative, who provided clear guidance on starting the process. “I got in contact with my Cotton Australia Rep, and he helped me fully through the process and to get it all started,” Peter said. The process turned out to be less complex than expected. “When we realised that there wasn’t that much to actually do, we thought we’d just keep going with the process,” he added. Essential tasks included updating signage, logging chemical storage, and managing inventory.

Enhancing Farm Safety

For Peter, the myBMP program was an opportunity to reinforce his commitment to staff safety. “We’re all about staff safety these days anyway,” he noted. While it required some extra work, it aligned seamlessly with the farm’s existing safety protocols.

Peter suggests that other growers consult their representatives to better understand the requirements. “A lot of people probably think it’s a lot of time and money, but if they get their Rep out to have a look, they might realise they already have many of the things in place that they need,” he said. This perspective can help make the certification process more accessible and less daunting.
