Australian Future Cotton Leaders Program: Opening Doors to a World of Opportunities

The Australian Future Cotton Leaders Program (AFCLP) has made a massive contribution to many of the industry’s most prominent leaders and last week another career milestone was reached for a graduate of that program.

Aaron Kiely, a cotton grower from Emerald, was recently elected as the new President of the Queensland Farmers Federation, marking a career highlight for the farmer who is driven as much by his love for cotton as he is by his commitment to helping others.

Aaron began his leadership journey in 2016 when he was encouraged to apply for the Australian Future Cotton Leaders Program, following selection he undertook a year-long program focused on Leadership Development, Skill Application, Leading Change, and Industry Contribution. Reflecting on the AFCLP, Aaron highlighted, "One of the best takeaways are the networks gained from other cotton farming regions and making valuable connections to continue learning from others."

Upon graduating, Aaron represented the Cotton Industry at the 2017 GrowAg event, showcasing industry innovation and research to peers in agriculture. Building on his AFCLP foundation, he was shoulder tapped from within the cotton industry to purse the TRAIL Emerging Leaders Program in 2020 and was successful and, in 2021, applied for the Australian Rural Leadership Program (ARLP) Course 29 and was again successful, after embarking on the 15-month journey he graduated in September 2023. The ARLP brought together a diverse group of industry professionals from across all agricultural sectors around Australia, offering valuable insights and fostering significant friendships.

Looking back, Aaron noted the broader applications of the learned skills: "It's not just for board appointments; the skills are applicable to my business and community roles." This confidence led him to a more active role in the local Cotton Growers Association, serving as Vice President for three years followed by three and a half years as President to now currently serving as Past President. Aaron continues to support the cotton industry as the Cotton Australia Regional Representative for the Central Highlands, CRDC panel member and a highlight, Chair of the selection panel for the CRDC Chris Lehmann Trust Young Cotton Achiever of the Year Award.

Mentoring has played a crucial role in Aaron's growth. Jo Eady, AFCLP facilitator, provided ongoing support beyond the program. Reflecting on leadership skills, Aaron shared, "One of the best things I gained is my capacity to give back to others and contribute positively to the community."

Aaron pays it forward by mentoring in the Cotton20 program, deepening his understanding of agricultural leadership dynamics. He is currently mentoring beef producer Lachie Smith who is a participant of the Beef Australia’s Graeme Acton Beef Connections Program 2024.

His dedication to the cotton industry and leadership skills led to roles in the Central Highlands Cotton Growers’ and Irrigators Association, Queensland Farmers' Federation Board (Non-Executive Director and Vice President for two years), and recently, as the new President of the Queensland Farmers' Federation.

For those considering the AFCLP, Aaron advises, "Challenge yourself; no need to wait for the perfect time. Tackle challenges, and the right moment will come." His message encapsulates his journey—embracing challenges leads to meaningful opportunities.
