CGA reps attend General Meeting in Sydney

Close to 30 representatives from Cotton Grower Associations have attended the June General Meeting in Sydney to hear about the latest developments in their industry, the work of the Cotton Australian team and to consider research priorities.

The General meeting was held on the 3rd of June, closely followed by the CRDC Research forum the following morning, where grower input was encouraged relating to research priorities.

An evaluation of the 27 CGA responses taken after the Geneal Meeting found the attendees rated the meeting an average 6 out of 7 for value, while 26 indicated they had gained new information/knowledge to pass on to their CGA’s while all but two said their issues had been addressed.

The respondents nominated water access and advocacy as the number 1 industry challenge over the next 12 months, followed by:

  • Market access/marketability
  • myBMP structure and certification
  • Social licence and sustainability
  • Disease particularly Verticillium and Fusarium wilts
  • Seed quality, trials and XtendFlex performance
  • Training

Narrabri grower Sam Carberry attended on behalf of the Lower Namoi CGA. “It was good finding out from other growers what’s happened over the season, but also seeing the work done in the policy area and what needs addressing in the future.

“There was also a big focus on myBMP, traceability and accessibility, making sure we have market access in the future to compete with Brazil and the US. Overall, it was a positive experience. It was great!”
