Cultivating Safety: Leveraging myBMP Principles for Success in Dryland Cotton Farming

Farm safety is vital for dryland cotton farmer Kevin Schwager, who is committed to fostering a robust safety culture across his properties, acknowledging its important impact throughout the supply chain. Operating four farms in the Narrabri region, all certified under the myBMP (My Best Management Practices) program, Kevin aims to instill this safety mindset across the entire farming business, from himself and farm managers to casual employees and contractors—a mindset he hopes filters down the supply chain and reaches the fashion industry worldwide.

“Our farming mindset is that the health and safety of our staff and contractors is the number one priority, and the myBMP program outlines principles necessary to ensure safety is consistently prioritised,” Kevin said.

For Kevin, myBMP certification is also a point of pride, showcasing responsible Australian cotton cultivation. It stands as evidence of the commitment of Australian growers to producing cotton at a best practice standard and highlighting the quality of their cotton.

“The message is going down the supply chain that what we are doing on our farms is responsible, and it’s being shown that way on garments.”

This season, Kevin and his team have planted over 1,800 hectares of dryland cotton, all of which will be myBMP certified. As he renews his myBMP certification and enters his sixth year of certification, Kevin wants fellow growers to see that the investment in time and money for myBMP certification isn't as time-consuming or expensive as perceived.

“If you're already implementing a best-practice approach on the farm, you're already most of the way there, and if you are falling a little short, becoming myBMP certified will allow you to improve your farming operation in a responsible and purposeful manner.

“The premium per bale from Better Cotton helps recover initial outlays, and the return on investment is relatively quick.”
