Teach the Teacher events rolling out over coming weeks
Teachers in Gunnedah are the latest to learn more about cotton production during Cotton Australia’s popular Teach the Teacher program which is currently being rolled out across cotton-growing communities in New South Wales and Queensland’s Darling Downs region.
Four more events are due to be held over the next few weeks – in Moree, Chinchilla/Dalby, Warren and Cecil Plains – providing local teachers with the opportunity to visit a cotton farm and gin and engage directly with growers and industry professionals.
Cotton Australia’s Education Manager Jenny Hughes said Teach the Teacher is designed to bridge the gap between classrooms and agriculture, equipping local teachers with knowledge about cotton farming and processing that they can take back to their classrooms.
“By strengthening teachers’ understanding of production processes and supply chains, the program equips them to confidently embed agriculture into classroom learning,” Ms Hughes said.
“Equally valuable is the opportunity for teachers to connect directly with farm managers, agronomists, ginners and extension officers. These conversations enhance teachers’ ability to share authentic, current career pathways with students - opening their eyes to opportunities they may not otherwise consider.”
Teach the Teacher offers a flexible delivery that allows each cotton‑growing region to tailor the experience to its local community, while maintaining a consistent goal - to upskill and immerse teachers in cotton production.
Ms Hughes said understanding where everyday products come from is becoming an increasingly important part of modern education, with more than 140 Australian curriculum outcomes now linked to food and fibre.
“Learning the origins of familiar items - such as sheets, towels, T‑shirts and denim jeans - brings subjects like science, geography and humanities to life,” she said.
“It makes learning practical and relevant, increasing student engagement and motivation, while building the critical thinking skills needed to make informed and responsible decisions.”
