Minister visits flood-impacted growers in Dawson and Callide Valleys
Local growers across the Dawson and Callide Valleys met with Queensland Minister for Primary Industries, the Hon. Tony Perrett, during visits to Theodore and Biloela on 18 March, providing a chance to raise current challenges directly.
Producers spoke about the impact of recent flooding, including crop losses, on-farm damage and the investment already made into affected crops. Concerns were also raised about river and creek height indicators, along with the need for better management and maintenance of monitoring stations. Access to timely recovery support and simpler processes were consistent themes. Broader pressures were also discussed, including rising fuel and fertiliser costs, road and infrastructure issues, and the combined effect on productivity and profitability.
Cotton Australia Regional Manager Renee Surawski said the opportunity for direct conversations was valued. “Having the Minister on the ground, listening directly to producers, was important. It helps ensure the realities in our region are understood,” she said. “Producers appreciated the chance to speak about both immediate recovery needs and longer-term challenges.”
The visit reinforced the importance of ongoing communication between government and the agriculture industry, particularly during recovery periods.

Disaster relief for impacted growers
The Queensland Reconstruction Authority is offering Disaster Assistance Loans of up to $2 million for primary producers affected by the Queensland Monsoon Trough, Tropical Cyclone Koji and associated severe weather from 24 December 2025. A list of eligible shires is available online.
At the time of publication, disaster assistance for Banana Shire had not been confirmed. For Northern Territory growers impacted by recent flooding, Cotton Australia is continuing discussions with the NT Government to clarify available support.
