Floodplain harvesting compliance update
The NSW Natural Resources Access Regulator (NRAR) has reminded water users in the Border Rivers and Gwydir Valley that they are now required to have primary metering equipment installed by a qualified installer if they intend capturing water moving across a floodplain, in accordance with their licence conditions.
The NSW Government’s reforms to control floodplain harvesting within legal limits became law in the Border Rivers and Gwydir Valleys last year meaning those with a licence have the right to capture and store water as it flows across the floodplain, but they have to measure and report their water take in accordance with the conditions of their linked water supply works approvals.
Cotton Australia’s Michael Murray said installing compliant metering equipment has been challenging due to equipment and installer shortages. “Cotton Australia recognises not everyone has been able to become compliant within the timeframe but water users must show they have made every endeavour to comply and should document those efforts.”
